What is Sober Living?

A sober living home is a structured, substance-free residential environment designed to support individuals transitioning from addiction treatment to independent living. A Sober Living home does not administer medical health care or mental health care by a licensed physician and it does not administer medication.

Why is it effective?

“Accountability” would be at the top of the list. A sober living home requires a person to have a job, pay rent, participate in random drug and alcohol testing, and requires attendance at 12 Step meetings. House members are required to do chores, adhere to a curfew and they live with a house manager.

How does stable housing play a pivotal role?

Organizations such as THEI emphasize that access to housing is essential to breaking the cycle of incarceration, providing the stability needed for rehabilitation, and reducing recidivism. Research supports this, showing that individuals on probation who experience housing insecurity are significantly more likely to reoffend. Likewise, recovery housing programs have been linked to higher employment rates, longer periods of abstinence, and greater success in reintegrating into society—demonstrating that stable, supportive housing is a cornerstone of lasting recovery and public safety.

How does someone find a sober living home?

Individuals can discover sober living homes through several key pathways. Some learn about available homes while incarcerated or during the reentry process, as part of their release planning. In drug courts, participants may be referred or assigned to a sober living residence. Rehabilitation and treatment facilities often recommend transitional housing. Family members conduct their own research, and word-of-mouth referrals play a vital role.

Certification — excellence & accountability

Recovery Housing Certification is essential to ensure quality, safety, and accountability within the recovery housing community. It establishes standardized practices that promote a supportive, drug- and alcohol-free environment, fostering successful recovery outcomes. Certification ensures that recovery homes meet essential health and safety standards, provide evidence-based support services, and operate ethically, protecting residents from potential exploitation.

Jon Boucher — Founder & Director

Jon's personal recovery journey began on November 2, 2020, and that experience now fuels the mission, integrity, and compassion behind the organization. After dedicating years to volunteer service as a recovery mentor to inmates at the Williamson County Jail in Franklin, Tennessee, Jon recognized a critical gap in post-treatment and reentry support for men overcoming incarceration, addiction, and other life hardships. Jon felt called to develop a structured recovery housing program designed to provide stability, accountability, and a clear path forward.

Today, Jon remains steadfast in his personal recovery and deeply committed to serving others. He actively participates in 12-step programs, faith-based recovery initiatives, and weekly church services, recognizing the importance of continued growth and accountability. In addition to leading Dry Ground Recovery Housing, Jon is the founder of Recovery Smiles, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing dental restoration services to individuals in recovery—helping restore not only their smiles, but also their confidence and dignity. Jon also serves as a recovery mentor to men at the Williamson County Jail and volunteers with Jesus Provisions Ministry, assisting in providing meals and compassionate support to individuals experiencing homelessness throughout Nashville. Through leadership, service, and lived experience, Jon remains dedicated to helping men rebuild their lives and establish a strong foundation for lasting recovery.
